National Sustainability Day: Católica on the path to a more sustainable future

"On 25 September, National Sustainability Day is celebrated, a moment of reflection and action to promote a more just, equitable and sustainable future. At Universidade Católica Portuguesa, sustainability is more than a concept; it is a daily practice that is reflected in all its actions, from its institutional policies to the projects developed by the academic community. Our university has been increasingly recognised for its commitment to promoting sustainability in all its dimensions – teaching, research, social and environmental responsibility – and the involvement of all members of the community is crucial to achieving this goal. This commitment will be even more evident during Católica's first Sustainability Week, which will take place between 24 and 28 November at the University's different locations – Lisbon, Porto, Braga and Viseu.

With a diverse programme of activities, including lectures, sustainable markets and initiatives addressing the various pillars of sustainability, we will create a meeting point for dialogue and knowledge, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will be a unique opportunity to inform, raise awareness, engage and empower the academic community to take action and change behaviours in favour of a more sustainable future.

Sustainability, as a transversal concept, includes environmental issues, but also encompasses social justice, economic equity and responsible governance. At the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, the initiatives that make up the Sustainability Week are designed to reflect this holistic vision, ensuring that all aspects of sustainability are addressed in an integrated manner. In addition, collaboration between different academic units and campi is essential to the success of this project, ensuring that the diversity of perspectives enriches the discussion and concrete actions.

The Sustainability Subcommittee in the Quality System, and the involvement of various members of the community, play a central role in this process, not only by supporting Sustainability Week, but also by continuously integrating sustainable practices into the Universidade Católica's mission and strategy.

The Sustainability Week is, therefore, an opportunity to come together around a common purpose: building a more sustainable and just future for generations to come. Católica invites everyone to participate actively, sharing knowledge, experiences, and practices that can contribute to a more just and sustainable world.

On National Sustainability Day, we reinforce our commitment to this cause, which should belong to everyone and be for everyone, at all times. It is crucial to be an agent of change. Because, as sustainability teaches us, every action counts. And together, we can make a difference."
