Integrated Project of the Master's Degree in Food Engineering receives international recognition

An article entitled ‘A project-based learning approach to promote innovation and academic entrepreneurship in a master's degree in food engineering’ was recently awarded the Tanner Award for being among the three most viewed articles in the Journal of Food Science Education.

The article presents and reflects on the initiative of the Master's Degree in Food Engineering at the Faculty of Biotechnology, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, which combines various disciplines with the aim of developing fundamental competences in students for companies in the food sector. It involves the development of a New Food Product, in which students have the opportunity to design, specify and develop an innovative product, including a prototype and suitable packaging, an analysis of the respective market and an economic analysis.

Students are also encouraged and supported to take part in relevant innovation and entrepreneurship programs and competitions in the food sector. These include the Ecotrophelia Competition, which challenges students to develop sustainable food products, and the Comendador Arménio Miranda Mentoring Programme, which provides personalized guidance and support for young entrepreneurs.

This international recognition and participation in prestigious programs is a reflection of the Faculty of Biotechnology’s ongoing commitment to promoting academic excellence and preparing its students to face real-world challenges in the food industry.
