Faculty of Biotechnology launches new Master's in Biotechnology for the Bioeconomy

Biotechnology for the Bioeconomy is the new master's program at the Faculty of Biotechnology (ESB) of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa. A unique program in Portugal, designed to address the global challenges of sustainability, health, and technological innovation. It stands out for its practical and interdisciplinary approach, preparing a new generation of professionals to lead scientific progress in areas such as biochemistry, biology, agriculture, environmental conservation, and biomedicine.

“This master’s aims to train professionals capable of addressing the most pressing challenges of the bioeconomy, combining the best of science with a practical, innovation-oriented vision,” explains Marta Vasconcelos, coordinator of the Master’s in Biotechnology for the Bioeconomy. “We want our students to not only develop excellent scientific skills but also become leaders who make a difference in a transforming world,” she adds.

“The launch of this master’s reflects the commitment of the Faculty of Biotechnology to offer excellence in education, aligned with market needs and global challenges,” highlights Paula Castro, director of ESB.

With a duration of four semesters and taught entirely in English, the master's program combines solid scientific training with management tools focused on innovation. Students will have the opportunity to explore advanced topics such as Integrative Biology, Omics, Genetic Editing, Artificial Intelligence, and the fundamentals of the bioeconomy, culminating in a professional project and a master’s thesis.

The program is aimed at holders of undergraduate degrees in Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, Chemistry, Bioengineering, or related fields, as well as anyone who believes science will bring solutions to significant issues affecting humanity, such as climate change, environmental sustainability, and health.
