Católica launches pioneering study on Temporary Homeless Centres

‘Exploring the inflammatory profile of homelessness population: a comprehensive analysis of individuals in two temporary shelters in Lisbon’ is the new study by the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

Led by Amélia Simões Figueiredo and Nuno Rosa, professors at the School of Nursing, Lisbon (EE), the groundbreaking work involved researchers from EE, the Faculty of Health Sciences and Nursing, the Faculty of Dental Medicine, the Católica Medical School, the Facultad de Ciencias para el Cuidado de la Salud, Universidad San Sebastian, Chile, and the Homeless Planning and Intervention Centre, Lisbon.

The results of the study provide important clues about the state of health of the homeless population through the quantification of inflammatory cytokines associated with chronic inflammatory diseases. By returning the results to those responsible for these resources, the researchers believe it will be possible to help health services assess the effectiveness of treatment, monitor diseases and develop effective strategies and interventions to improve the quality of life of the homeless population.

This work was the result of the CIIS Internal project ‘Vulnerable plus vulnerable - Diagnosis and prevention of the risk of COVID 19 and the inflammatory state of homeless people in the city of Lisbon’ under the Programmematic funding (UIDP/04279/2020), and a clear example of the impact of the research centre's interdisciplinary research on vulnerable populations.
