Conversations on Law in Action | Eyal Benvenisti

On 3 March at 12 p.m., the Conversations on Law in Action programme, organised by the Faculty of Law of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, will welcome Professor Eyal Benvenisti for a discussion entitled ‘Sovereign Equality in the Age of Empire’.

In this session, Professor Benvenisti will argue that the UN Security Council is undermining the UN Charter’s core promise of sovereign equality and self-determination. He will show how recent resolutions on Western Sahara and Gaza illustrate a “tripolar entente” among the United States, China, and Russia, where major powers tacitly accept each other’s territorial ambitions while smaller states are left marginalized. As this great-power maneuvering fosters unpredictability and weakens cooperation, international law risks becoming a framework preserved in form but stripped of real substance.
