Margarida Abreu Award

The  Faculty of Human Sciences will honor the legacy of Margarida Abreu, a social worker and distinguished professor, by establishing the Margarida Abreu Award, which aims to support, on an annual basis starting in the 2026/2027 academic year, one student entering the Undergraduate Degree in Social Work whose life story demonstrates exceptional resilience, the ability to overcome challenges, and a commitment to the values of social work. This award seeks to recognize life stories marked by courage, a sense of social responsibility, solidarity, and service to others.

The selection process values candidates’ personal backgrounds, their social and community involvement, the human and ethical values they have demonstrated, and their motivation to pursue a career in social work; academic performance is not a criterion for evaluation.

In addition to being an honorary distinction, the award includes a monetary component granted through the Margarida Abreu Fund. Through this initiative, the Faculty of Human Sciences aims to perpetuate Margarida Abreu’s personal and professional legacy and to inspire new generations to place human dignity, social justice, and the common good at the center of their work.
