Totalitarianism in Europe: Universidade Católica hosts exhibition on European totalitarian regimes

After an itinerancy that included 22 major cities in 19 countries in Europe and North America, the exhibition Totalitarianism in Europe arrives at Católica's Palma de Cima campus, in partnership between the Institute of Political Studies and the +Liberdade Institute, and with the support of the Culture@Catolica 2021 programme.

On show until December 17 on the Lisbon campus of the UCP, the exhibition presents the European totalitarian regimes chronologically, creating a route in 3 nuclei, distributed by the three buildings of the campus: Lobby of Building 1 (FCH; Theology; Law; Medical Sciences); Lobby next to the exhibition room, in the Library building; Lobby of the CATÓLICA-LISBON building.

Carlos Guimarães Pinto, executive director of the +Liberdade Institute, reveals that "the exhibition aims to remember Europe's tragic totalitarian past, helping to prevent the recurrence of any form of totalitarian regime in the future. Memory is important so that we never forget the importance of defending fundamental human rights, individual freedoms and guarantees, as well as democratic values in society."

The concept and organisation of the exhibition were done by the Platform of European Memory and Conscience, an international non-governmental organisation, founded by 20 members from European Union states, whose purpose is to raise public awareness about European history and the crimes committed by totalitarian regimes, enhancing wide discussion at a European level about the causes and consequences of these regimes.

The inauguration of the exhibition took place in Auditorium 2, on November 24th, at 6.30 p.m., in the scope of the Open Class Tradition of Liberty: remembering Holodomor, oriented by Professor João Carlos Espada and having as discussants Carlos Guimarães Pinto (Executive Director of the +Liberdade Institute), João Pereira Coutinho (Professor IEP-UCP), Aline Beuvinke (Professor UAL) and José Miguel Sardica (Professor FCH and IEP-UCP).
