Law School leadership takes office for the 2025-2028 term
On 5 November, in Lisbon, the inauguration ceremony was held for the director of the Faculty of Law of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and its respective Schools: Lisbon School, Porto School and Católica Global School of Law, for the 2025-2028 term. José Moutinho remains as director of the Faculty of Law, Ana Taveira da Fonseca takes on another term at the helm of the Lisbon School, and Miguel Poiares Maduro continues to lead the Católica Global School of Law. As for the Porto School, Marta Portocarrero was sworn in as the new director.
Expressing her appreciation for the work done by previous teams, the President of Católica, Isabel Capeloa Gil, thanked the members of the new management teams for "their commitment to this great project, which is the Faculty of Law, the teaching of law, legal research, the work of translation, social impact and transfer that the Faculty of Law and its schools have represented throughout these almost 60 years of the Universidade Católica's existence‘. She also pointed out ’new challenges, always demanding", especially considering the disruption brought about by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Referring to law as a ‘core area of knowledge’ at Católica, Isabel Capeloa Gil also recalled ‘the very specific matrix of Christian humanism that law at Católica represents and the very strong example it sets as a school of excellence in training lawyers dedicated to the common good’.
‘I am sure that it will be another successful term in terms of our ultimate goal, excellence, innovation, doing everything in a new way, in terms of scientific research and teaching, but also with highly effective and high-level management,’ assured the director of the Faculty of Law in his speech, referring to the new directions. For the next three years, José Moutinho pointed out as priorities promoting the unity of the faculty and joint research projects, diversifying and consolidating the teaching staff, revisiting the student mobility programme and strengthening talent retention.
Ana Taveira, director of the Lisbon School, also reiterated that renewing the teaching staff will be one of the goals of this new term. At the same time, she indicated the ambition to maintain the high rating of the research carried out and to adapt the pedagogical model to AI, in particular the new degree programme that is being prepared, so that ‘students see added value in the university.’
Describing the Porto School as ‘a project of rigour, excellence and quality’, the new director, Marta Portocarrero, explained in her inauguration speech that she views her new position with a ‘dual commitment: respect for the past and an attempt to highlight what sets us apart’. Focusing on interdisciplinary projects, developing talent retention strategies and investing in internationalisation will be her main areas of focus.
In closing, Miguel Poiares Maduro, appointed director of the Católica Global School of Law, stated his desire to continue promoting synergies between schools, increasing and diversifying educational offerings to meet growing demand, and contributing to research excellence. ‘We will continue to fulfil this fundamental role, which is to promote the Universidade Católica Law School and its very own unique identity,’ he assured.
On this occasion, the remaining members of the management teams of the three schools also took office. Patrícia Martins, Rita Lynce Faria, Miguel Correia, Fernando Oliveira e Sá, and Joana Arnaut complete the management team of the Lisbon School. For the Porto School, Sofia Pais, Catarina Botelho, Ana Teresa Ribeiro, António Frada, and Pedro Freitas were sworn in, as well as Benedita Menezes Queiroz and Giovanni De Gregorio as deputy directors of the Católica Global School of Law.
