Pedro Mexia and Rui Chafes: "Form and Transcendence"

Matter, form, word and poetry. An open conversation between the poet, chronicler and literary critic Pedro Mexia and the sculptor Rui Chafes, about the exhibition Studentato - a partnership between the Serralves Foundation, the Porto Academic Federation and Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

 


Pedro Mexia was born in Lisbon in 1972. He graduated in Law at Universidade Católica Portuguesa. He wrote literary and chronicle reviews for the newspapers Diário de Notícias and Público, and is currently a contributor to the weekly Expresso. He is one of the members of the Shadow Government (TSF / TVI24). He was deputy director and interim director of Cinemateca Portuguesa. He published six poetry books, anthologized in Menos por Menos (2011), followed by Once Upon a Time All Lost (2015) and the personal selection of Selected Poems (2018). He edited the volumes of the newspapers Fora do Mundo (2004), Prova de Vida (2007), Marital Status (2009), Lei Seca (2014) and Malparado (2017), and the collections of chronicles Pessoa (2006), Nada de Melancolia (2008), The Lives of Others (2010), O Mundo dos Vivos (2012), Cinematheque (2013), Library (2015) and Lá Fora (2018, APE Chronicle Grand Prix). In Brazil, they came out. It was more like it rained (chronicles, 2015) and Contratempo (poetry, 2016). He organized a volume of essays by Agustina Bessa-Luís, Affectionate Contemplation of Anguish; the anthology Verbo: Deus as Interrogação in Portuguese Poetry [with José Tolentino Mendonça]; The Fatal Man, chronicles chosen by Nelson Rodrigues; and Nada Tem encanto, a poetic anthology by Rui Knopfli. Translated Robert Bresson, Tom Stoppard, Hugo Williams and Martin Crimp. He coordinates the poetry collection of Tinta-da-china. In 2015 and 2016 he was a member of the Camões Prize jury.

 

Rui Chafes was born in Lisbon in 1966. He graduated in Sculpture at ESBAL in 1989, then went to Dusseldorf, where he attended Kunstakademie, under the direction of the German artist Gerhard Merz. He exhibited for the first time individually in Lisbon (1986) in an exhibition entitled Bird Ofended. Dream and Death, Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon (1993). Würzburg Bolton Landing (CAM / FCG), Lisbon (1995) and During the End, Sintra Museum of Modern Art, Pena National Palace, Sintra (2000), are some of his most important exhibitions. He published several books (Würzburg Bolton Landing, During the End, The Silence of ...), chose and translated Fragments of Novalis. Winner of the Pessoa Award 2015.
