" MIGRANTS: A CHANGING LANDSCAPE IN PORTUGAL"
"Migrant flows to Portugal have increased dramatically in recent years. Moreover, the traditional migrants coming from Lusophone Africa were replaced by Brazilians, first, and in the most recent years by Eastern Europeans. From a country of outflow of migrants Portugal suddenly became a country of destiny for evermore important incoming migrants. Thus, the social, economic and cultural fabric of the nation has experienced widespread change in contact with enhanced diversity. The overall balance of migrant impact has been positive and this is recocgnised by the majority of the population. However, Portugal faces very serious problems to learn how to manage the incoming flows (both legal and illegal) of new migrants as well as to implement a smooth integration into the social fabric avoiding the decline in social capital."
